Media Statement: Parliamentary Netball team to battle Trans-Tasman colleagues in Sydney
The New Zealand Parliamentary Netball team will travel to Australia this week to face off against our Trans-Tasman parliamentary colleagues for the second time this year.
“Our Parliamentary Netball team has been working hard over the last couple of years to build support and expand our game opportunities,” says Co-captain Louise Upston.
“We were delighted to have our first ever game against Australia in March this year and we are looking forward to the opportunity to further develop our inter-parliamentary relationship with our Trans-Tasman colleagues in Sydney on Friday.
Co-captain Louisa Wall says the inaugural games against our Australian counterparts come during an important year and contribute to our recognition of this year’s WW100 events.
“In honour of WW100 the NZ Parliamentary Netball team will be introducing The Diggeress Cup to symbolize mateship and the important relationship between our two countries. This Cup will be played for by the two Trans-Tasman nations at least once every Parliamentary Term.”
The NZ Parliamentary Netball team frequently plays matches around New Zealand with the aim of raising awareness and support for local charities.
“The match in Sydney will raise funds for the Confident Girls program. This initiative aligns perfectly with the NZ parliamentary sports trust ethos of partnering our communities in the promotion of sport in its ability to develop healthy and resilient communities,” Ms Wall says.
“Building confidence both on and off the court will help develop our young girls into future leaders and we are looking forward to supporting this fantastic initiative,” Ms Upston says.
The NZ Parliamentary Netball team will depart for Sydney early in the morning on Friday 14 August to play in a series of matches against both the NSW State Parliament and the Australian Federal Parliament.
The team will also attend a formal welcome at the NSW Parliament, a post-match reception with all teams and the Silver Ferns game on the evening of Friday 14 August.
