Can you see a future for yourself as an MP? Young people are now invited to apply to be a part of Youth Parliament 2016.

Youth Parliament is a triannual process held since 1994 and MP for Taupo Louise Upston says she is looking forward to receiving applications from young people in the electorate aged between 16 and 18 years old.

“Our Youth MP will have the opportunity to be an integral part of the public decision making process of our New Zealand democratic system. The ideal candidate will be someone who has the ability to go out and engage with the youth in the electorate when their tenure starts in January 2016, and the highlight of their role will be representing their peers’ views at Youth Parliament on 19 and 20 July 2016.

“Youth Parliament is an exciting and engaging experience where Youth MPs will debate legislation, sit on select committees and ask oral questions of Ministers, just like the real thing.”

Louise said her selection process will include visiting and engaging with student leaders and bodies of local high schools and colleges, as well as considering applications from Youth Guarantee students from accredited organisations. Shortlisted candidates will have an opportunity to pitch their credentials in a panel interview, and will have their ongoing successes showcased through the follow-up media coverage.

“I am hopeful that the process will attract the best possible candidate to represent the Taupo electorate in Parliament,” Louise said.

As well as choosing a Youth MP, Louise will also select Youth Advisory Board representatives from applicants.

“This will give a number of young people the chance to play an active part in their community and to share the views of the youth of the electorate with me, so I can take these views to Wellington.”

Information on the application process is available on the website or by emailing Connie at

Applications close on October 9, with interviews being held between October 12 and 16. The successful Youth MP for Taupo will be announced on 19 October 2015.  More details about Youth Parliament are available by visiting
