Media Statement: Shakeout Day - Sign up for ShakeOut and make sure you’re ready for an earthquake
Louise Upston, MP for Taupo is encouraging everyone in the Taupo electorate to sign up for and participate in the upcoming national earthquake drill, ShakeOut, on Thursday 15 October.
“Earthquakes can happen anywhere and at any time, so it is vital that everyone in the Waikato Region gets involved with ShakeOut 2015 next week”.
The last drill in 2012 had the highest participation rate of any country, beating the US, Canada and Japan. “This year the goal is to be New Zealand’s largest ever earthquake drill with 1.5 million people signed up and participating,” says Louise.
By signing up on the ShakeOut website (www.shakeout.govt.nz) kiwis can get information on the right actions to take before, during and after an earthquake. There are also resources for schools, businesses, non-English speakers and people with disabilities.
“Everyone, everywhere should know what to do before, during and after an earthquake. As a nation we have seen and experienced first-hand, what happens when a large quake strikes a populated area”.
“It’s great to see that over 79,000 people in the Waikato Region have signed up already along with over one million other kiwis”.
In Taupo, there are over 3,800 participants. In the South Waikato District over 2,500 and in the Cambridge/Waipa District there are over 6,900 participates for ShakeOut 2015 and counting.
“It would be great to double these numbers in the Taupo electorate and have the largest number of participants in New Zealand”.
“Make sure you visit the ShakeOut website and sign up for the drill with your school, your family, your colleagues or just yourself and remember to drop, cover and hold at 9:15am on 15 October,” Louise says.
