The Government is investing almost $530,000 in maintaining and enhancing the Waikato River Cycling and Walking Trail.

The investment, from the Maintaining the Quality of the Great Rides fund, will go towards new trail construction, bridge and boardwalk enhancements, trail resurfacing and the installation of safety barriers.

Local MP, Hon Louise Upston says, “The Waikato River Cycling and Walking Trail is a local landmark.

“This funding means the Waikato River Trails Charitable Trust can continue to improve the tracks along the mighty Waikato River.

“I congratulate them on being one of 10 projects to receive funding in this round. Priority was given to projects that improve the safety and quality of the Great Rides and I look forward to seeing the improvements to our local tracks.

“The Great Rides are an important tourist attraction in our local area. They provide a significant boost to tourist operators and the construction and maintenance of them provides jobs for locals.

“I would encourage any interested Taupo locals to give it a go and enjoy New Zealand’s beautiful scenery.

“More than 125,000 people used the New Zealand Cycle Trail in January 2015 - a huge increase on 97,000 the previous year.”

The Government has invested a total of just under $2 million in the fund so far to maintain and further enhance the trails.
